How to carve out time to do social media marketing

Besides fear of negative comments and a general misunderstanding of how people use new(er) media to communicate, most naysayers tell me they don’t have the time to devote to social media marketing.

It’s a fair concern, for sure. I’ve found it really hard at times to carry out my social media duties — especially when handling a crisis communication situation or working on a deadline-sensitive project.

Here are a few practices that I’ve found helpful as many priorities compete for time devoted to social media marketing:

(1) Develop a strategic plan with measurable objectives and timelines. This keeps you focused, even as other priorities come along.

(2) Make social media a part of your daily work routine. Check your Twitter searches, Facebook mentions, YouTube channel visits, etc. first thing in the morning. Check in on Foursquare within minutes of arriving at the office.

(3) Use tools such as HootSuite and Tweetdeck to schedule a week’s worth of status updates and tweets in advance. You’re ahead of the game when those inevitable tasks (outside of social media) that need immediate completion arise.

(4) Use your smartphone or laptop to complete tasks while waiting on an elevator, bus ride or meeting to start. I especially like the latest LinkedIn app on my Android phone. It has allowed me to spend a lot more time connecting with people on LinkedIn.

(5) Give yourself a set amount of time to read and comment on blog posts, retweet tweets or like status updates. Even if it’s just 10 minutes, it adds up over time.
